Why UV Crosslinkers Drift and Why Calibrated Radiometry is Essential

Derived from the methodology of Zaikova, Yap, Aparicio et al., Nucleic Acids Research (2026).

1. The Fundamental Dose Law: Fluence (H) = Irradiance (Eₑ) × Time (t)

In optical radiation metrology (CIE S 026/E:2018, ISO 21348), the photochemical effect of ultraviolet light on cellular chromophores is determined by radiant exposure (also termed fluence or dose, denoted H or D). It is defined as the time integral of irradiance:

H [mJ/cm²] = Eₑ [mW/cm²] × t [seconds]

To deliver 26.5 mJ/cm² of UVA (365 nm) when your lamp produces an incident radiant flux density of 1.930 mW/cm², the required exposure duration is:

t = 26.46 mJ/cm² ÷ 1.930 mW/cm² = 13.71 seconds
